My Story

I am a technical marketer with 20 years experience crafting world-class websites, building multimedia that makes you love the brand, crunching analytics, demystifying SEO, pitching stories, and growing and engaging huge audiences on social.

Marketer by day, coder by night, I enjoy creating strategic, engaging experiences. I live at the intersection of technology, design, and marketing communications.

DIGITAL MARKETING MANAGER
WATERLOO EDC
2021 - PRESENT

I lead the website development (waterlooedc.ca), design, video, digital brand advertising, and analytics for Waterloo EDC, the economic development agency for one of Canada's largest municipalities.

I managed the end-to-end development of a new website, from RFP, to stakeholder consultations, to working with agency designers and developers to create a world class economic development website.

I co-managed the marketing budget, ran extensive Linkedin and Google ads, and oversaw the design overhaul of our marketing collateral (75+ materials), sales decks, 7 video projects, photo library, and social media graphics to support lead generation.

APPLYBOARD
2020 - 2021

I was the marketing lead at ApplyBoard for projects that leverage technology. I managed the creation of assist.applyboard.com, a Zendesk knowledge base, including content mapping, stakeholder consultations, platform design, and technical development. I also managed the creation of applyboard.com and applyproof.com, including graphic creation, messaging, Wordpress template development, translations, maintenance, and security.

Website work included UI/UX, a branding revamp, and accessibility improvements to ensure AODA compliance. Other work included coding for landing pages, email automation, and liaising with engineering teams to maintain our digital properties.

2019 - 2020

I led the strategy and execution of digital marketing initiatives at ApplyBoard, an online platform for international student recruitment, and (at the time) Canada's fastest-growing tech company.

I was responsible for increasing engagement and reach across 7 social media channels, managing our ongoing content calendar, supporting high profile initiatives (resulting in the creation of the company rallying cry, #EducateTheWorld), and using digital advertising to attract new customers and partners.

I led the implementation of the applyboard.com website to support company and cross-functional needs, involving consultations with stakeholders, working with graphic designers and the engineering team, and applying programming skills to ensure a responsive, pixel-perfect implementation of designs.

2018 - 2019

Developed marketing programs using HubSpot, Salesforce, and SalesLoft to drive qualified restoration contractor leads through the sales funnel for Encircle's documentation and productivity tools.

As the Marketing Programs Manager, I managed email campaigns, wrote blog posts, developed marketing assets, and hosted webinars to generate leads. I also planned tradeshow programs and worked on 14 sales campaigns, resulting in $110,000 in revenue opportunities.

VELOCITY, UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO

Led Velocity's strategic marketing to build visibility among University of Waterloo students and the tech community for Canada's most productive startup incubator and entrepreneurship program.

I oversaw the implementation of creative marketing initiatives, managed social media, wrote blog posts and press releases, maintained several Wordpress websites, oversaw Mailchimp campaigns, mentored startups on public relations and growth efforts, built relationships with campus partners, liaised with investors and industry partners, supported events, and administered sponsorship.

Initiatives that I implemented resulted in greater brand visibility and a 20% increase in student and community event participation (50+ events/year, attracting 5,000+ annual participants).

Worked closely with a client to develop a video curation platform and community around people's love of science fiction videos.

The platform was built with Ruby on Rails and developed my knowledge of CSS, jQuery, and AJAX. Features include user registration/login, video submission, tagging, leaderboard, masonry grid, user subscriber feed, infinite scroll, voting, favouriting, nested comments, video meta-data extraction, image uploading, embedded video, scopes, validations, authorization, and responsive design.

2014

51Moments was a marketplace that helps you quickly and easily book a Vancouver photographer last minute, at a discounted price. As Digital Marketing Manager, I assisted with product development, and led the branding, planning, and coordination of the public relations campaign to launch 51moments.com, resulting in writeups from several large local newspapers (The Province and Vancouver Courier), as well as a number of tech and family bloggers.

2012 - 2013

Sortable built websites that helped people make better decisions. I managed the launch of our fastest growing websites (including CPUBoss.com, Televisor.com, and Geekaphone.com), which generated 5 million monthly visitors.

I applied mail, e-mail, and social media in creative ways to pitch media and promote Sortable websites, which resulted in 200+ articles, notably from Lifehacker, GigaOM, PC Gamer, PC World, the Financial Post, and the Globe & Mail. I engaged 150,000 fans of our websites via social media by writing articles, curating content, producing multimedia, facilitating discussion, and resolving problems. I also analyzed website traffic in Google Analytics and provided strategic recommendations.

MACROWIKINOMICS BOOK
2010

Worked with internationally respected authors Don Tapscott and Anthony Williams as part of the core research team in the production of the book Macrowikinomics, which discusses how digital innovations and collaborative technologies are reshaping industries around the world. I conducted extensive research, fact checking, editing, and writing for a 424 page manuscript under tight deadlines, and prepared a pitch for the CBC Radio series, ReCivilization. Sequel to the bestselling Wikinomics, this book was endorsed by the CEOs of Google, Nike, Dell, Ogilvy, Best Buy, and Accenture, and was a finalist for the Financial Times Best Book Award.

2008 - 2009

Responsible for producing research insight on technology and digital innovation. This research was conducted for Fortune 500 clients at a think tank led by Don Tapscott. I was praised for producing high quality work and possessing strong work ethic in supporting the Toronto and US offices, and played a key role in the launch of a digital marketing program and development of the company’s enterprise collaboration platform. I supported conference and executive initiatives and led an eight person team to update the company's multi-million dollar research library. I also blogged at www.wikinomics.com.

2006 - 2007

Responsibly drafted and managed a balanced, twelve month budget of $75,000 for this busy student technology centre. I was trusted to independently oversee cash deposits, hiring, training, biweekly pay processing, scheduling, and supervision for a staff of 18 during the academic school year, while working full-time during the summer to redesign the centre’s services and infrastructure. As manager, I reduced operational expenses by 5% while simultaneously increasing revenues by 25% (a 15 year record high) by eliminating operational inefficiencies, implementing renovations, developing new services, and coordinating creative promotions to attract new customers and promote customer loyalty.
